The 108 Defilements
A Buddhist Journey Through the Shadows of the Mind
108 Defilements is an exploration of the inner states that, within Buddhist thought, cloud perception and bind us to cycles of suffering.
Anger, pride, envy, fear, attachment, delusion — these and many subtler movements of the mind form part of a landscape that Buddhism has examined for centuries. Rather than treating such tendencies simply as faults to be condemned, this book approaches them as states to be recognised, understood, and ultimately transformed.
At its heart are the 108 defilements, presented individually through clear definitions, cultural context, and reflections on their significance. Each becomes a small mirror: an invitation to recognise the ways these qualities arise within our own thoughts, emotions, relationships, and responses to the world.
The number 108 carries deep symbolic importance within Buddhist tradition, reflected perhaps most visibly in the 108 beads of the mala or juzu. Here, that symbolism provides a framework for contemplating the many ways in which the mind wanders from clarity — and the possibility of returning to awareness.
Presented in English, Greek, and Japanese, the book also places these concepts across languages and cultural traditions, allowing the reader to encounter familiar human experiences through different linguistic perspectives.
Part Buddhist reference, part contemplative companion, 108 Defilements is intended not merely to be read from beginning to end, but returned to: a book for meditation, reflection, self-observation, and the continuing examination of the mind.
It is a journey into the shadows not for their own sake, but for what their recognition may reveal about the possibility of clarity, compassion, and liberation.
