Stamped by the Divine

A Pilgrim’s Record of Japan’s Sacred Temples, Shrines and Goshuin Seals

Stamped by the Divine is a personal pilgrimage through the sacred landscapes of Japan, recorded through temples, shrines, encounters with the divine, and the distinctive red-and-black impressions of goshuin.

At the heart of the book is the Japanese tradition of receiving goshuin: calligraphic seals offered at Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines as a record of a visit to a sacred place. Collected within a goshuincho, these inscriptions become more than souvenirs. Together, they form a tangible record of pilgrimage — of places visited, moments experienced, and a spiritual journey unfolding one encounter at a time.

Following the order in which the author personally visited each site, the book leads the reader through Japan temple by temple and shrine by shrine. Each entry explores not only where a sacred place can be found, but something of its individual character: its history, atmosphere, traditions, associated Buddhas, bodhisattvas, deities or kami, and the experience of encountering it in person.

Alongside this personal journey, Stamped by the Divine serves as an introduction to the culture surrounding Japanese sacred spaces. It explores the meaning and etiquette of collecting goshuin, the distinctions between Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines, and the customs that allow a visitor to approach both traditions respectfully.

Japanese names in kanji and romaji, locations, historical and spiritual context, information about the figures enshrined or worshipped, details of the goshuin received, and photographs identifying the sites combine to create a record that is at once practical, cultural and deeply personal.

Yet this is not simply a directory of sacred places.

It is a record of what happens when travel becomes pilgrimage — when entering a temple gate, approaching a shrine, offering a prayer or receiving a handwritten seal becomes an opportunity to slow down and encounter a different relationship with place, tradition and the sacred.

For the goshuin collector, it offers companionship and practical knowledge. For the traveller, it reveals another way of experiencing Japan. And for the spiritual pilgrim, it presents a journey shaped by mindfulness, reverence and curiosity.

Stamped by the Divine is ultimately a journey through sacred Japan, preserved one temple, one shrine, and one seal at a time.
